The similarities to Chaplin’s Modern Times, most especially the conveyor belt routine, didn’t go unnoticed.  Chaplin claimed never to have seen Clair’s film, and Clair himself was embarrassed by the controversy, as he considered it a complement that an artist like Chaplin could be influenced by his work.  An out-of-court settlement was eventually released.
