Included in the US National Film Registry at the Library of Congress in 1991.

Three times in the film Herbert Marshall’s character is seen running upstairs, a very deliberate in-joke: the actor had a wooden leg, and couldn’t run anywhere.

The movie was released in 1932, one year before the Hays’ Code came into effect.  As a result, the film’s sexual innuendos unfortunately caused it to be denied a re-release in 1935.

Trouble in Paradise has never been released on video or DVD in the UK.  In fact, Lubitsch’s work in general has been very poorly represented in the home video market over the years, a mid-nineties’ US laserdisc box-set being the only real celebration.  Fortunately – and very typically – the Criterion Collection has come to the rescue.
